Gousto’s Hangover Cure
You may be feeling a little worse for wear after a jolly good craic with your Irish friends, so we’re sharing the ultimate green juice Bloody Mary. The hangover cure that will get you through a tough morning after St. Patricks Day. Add a dash of luck with a four leaf clover… if you can find one.
Ingredients (for 2):
For the juice:
- 200g bunch of whole kale leaves
- 1 cucumber
- 4 celery stalks
- 15g parsley
- 2-3 tbsp juice from a jar of pickles (onion or gherkin both will be great)
- Pinch of salt
- ½ juice of half a lemon
- 50ml of vodka, optional
To make your juice, or you can buy fruit free green juice (we found it on Ocado):
Step 1: Remove the stalks from your kale, slice your cucumber in half lengthways and then into chunks. Add the kale leaves, cucumber, celery and parsley into a juicer and blend into juice.
Step 2: Squeeze the juice of half a lemon, and 2 tbsp of pickle juice into the juice with a pinch of salt and stir until combined. Try a spoonful and add extra pickle juice and salt to taste, you want it to be savoury with a slight tang.
Step 3: Divide between 2 glasses – check out our garnish tips below for how to add a chilli salt rim and add 25ml of vodka per glass if you’re looking for the hair of the dog.
Garnish ideas: You’ve made yourself a fortifying juice full of hangover busting antioxidants, now you can have fun raiding your fridge for fancy garnishes, grab your cocktail sticks and leftovers and lets go:
The classics: you can’t go wrong with a leafy stick of celery, and a spicy salt rim. Mix together 1 tsp of salt and one of chilli flakes (we love shichimi togarashi) on a plate, wipe the rim of a glass with a slice of lemon then roll the top of the glass in the chilli salt.
Stuff on sticks: It’s time to look through those random forgotten jars in the back of the fridge, olives, cornichons and pickled onions are all great options, thread them onto cocktail sticks to class up your drink – extra points if you can bring yourself to cube cheese to add to them.
Something substantial: Need a little protein to kickstart your day, crispy streaky bacon or prawns will add a savoury salty hit to your green drink.
Feeling fresh: time to check out what’s in your salad drawer, lemon/lime wedges, fresh chillis and sprigs of herbs will all add a pop of colour to your drink.
