Our 2023 Impact Report and how we’re making a real difference
Our third annual Impact Report has finally dropped. Join us as we look back at all the progress we made in 2023, and forward to the next steps in our sustainability journey.
Climate action
The world food system accounts for 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and 80% of deforestation, and is the leading cause of biodiversity loss. Reducing emissions and our impact on the natural world means making changes at all stages of food production.
As a player in such a high-impact industry, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to create positive change and reduce our footprint. We want to inspire a better, more sustainable system that values the food we eat and recognises its impact on the environment.
Fighting food waste
Globally, we waste a third of all food produced for human consumption each year. Food waste isn’t just a social issue — it’s an environmental one too. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to eat more sustainably and less wastefully. That’s why we’re cutting down food waste for ourselves and our customers. We’ve already seen an incredible amount of progress across food waste over the last 2 years and it’s all down to the hard work from teams across the business.
In 2022, we joined WRAP’s Courtauld Commitment 2030. The voluntary agreement enables collaborative action across the UK’s food and drink supply chains to create change in the industry and transform the food system. As a member, we’ve formally reported to WRAP and set a 50% reduction target for operational food waste by 2030. We’re already nearly there — in 2023 alone, we reduced our operational food waste by 42%.
Our packaging
As a member of WRAP’s UK Plastics Pact, we want to create a circular economy for plastic by 2025. We’re part of a movement to tackle the problem of plastic waste by stimulating innovation and new business models and building a better recycling system.
Packaging is an important part of the customer experience at Gousto. We’ve been working hard to make all our primary packaging 100% recyclable by 2025, and last year we achieved 74% recyclability (vs 72% in 2022). We had hoped for an increase higher than 2%, but the successful launch of boxes for 1, 3 and 5 people last year meant that new packaging formats knocked our recyclability progress in the short term.
We still made progress elsewhere. After making all our beef packaging recyclable, we’ll move more of our proteins to fully recyclable formats this year. The challenge to reach 100% recyclability by 2025 is considerable, but we’ve got teams working hard on the problem to make sure we get there.
