9 guilt-free ideas for pancake toppings
Delicious pancakes are a game of two halves. First, there’s the batter (check out these recipes for gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan pancakes), and then there’s the toppings.
Whether you have a sweet tooth or you’re more of a savoury fan, have a look at the ideas below for some tasty but healthy topping inspiration.
Ideas for sweet pancake toppings
Banana and walnut
- 1 chopped banana
- 1 tbsp chopped walnuts
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
Blueberries and Greek yoghurt or soya yoghurt
- 1 tbsp blueberries
- 1 tbsp Greek or soya yoghurt
- 1 tbsp chopped pecan nuts
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
Chopped banana and peanut or almond butter
Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut or almond butter on one half of the pancake, then add chopped banana and fold the pancake in half.
Banana, strawberries, hazelnuts and chocolate
- 1 chopped banana
- 1 handful of chopped strawberries
- 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts
- 1 tbsp grated dark chocolate
Greek yoghurt and mango
- 1 handful chopped mango
- 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- 1 tbsp Greek yoghurt
- 1 tbsp agave syrup
Pistachio, orange and coconut yoghurt
- 1 handful of chopped pistachio nuts
- Oranges peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp coconut yoghurt
- 1 tbsp agave syrup
Ideas for savoury pancake toppings
Smoked salmon and sour cream
- 1 tbsp sour cream
- Sprinkle of fresh chopped dill
- Squeeze of lemon
Cheese and spinach
- 2 tbsp grated cheddar
- 100g cooked spinach leaves
- 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
Spread the spinach leaves on to the pancake and sprinkle over the grated cheddar. Put under a hot grill for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese then top with the pumpkin seeds.
Avocado and tomatoes
- ½ avocado cut in to thin slices
- 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- 1 handful of chopped cherry tomatoes cut in half.
- Olive oil
And finally, few ideas for savoury pancake fillings:
- Mexican style black bean chilli topped with chopped coriander.
- Cooked mushrooms mixed with a béchamel sauce topped with grated cheddar.
- Mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and green pesto topped with grated parmesan.
